Today, I'm proud to announce that Malim AI Labs is officially registered as (social) enterprise with Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM).
What is a Social Enterprise?
A social enterprise is a business that puts social impact before profit maximization. Unlike traditional companies that primarily serve shareholders or owners, or Yayasan structure with pure charities that rely on donations, social enterprises operate in the middle ground:
Social enterprise generate revenue like any other businesses, but instead of distributing profits to owners, the profits are reinvested back into the cause.
Key characteristics of social enterprises:
- Vision-driven: Every product decision is evaluated through the lens of social impact
- Financially sustainable: We earn revenue to maintain independence and scale impact
- Impact measurable: We track beneficiaries served, lives changed, and problems solved
- Transparent: Our social mission and impact are going to be publicly documented unlike most sole-proprietorships
- Asset-locked: Profits are going to be reinvested in the mission, not extracted by owners so it will be more sustainable.
In Malaysia, social enterprises are rarely recognized but it is a vital forces for addressing societal challenges that neither the government nor traditional businesses adequately solve. From education gaps to digital divides, from rural poverty to environmental sustainability - social enterprises tackle the hardest problems with innovative, sustainable solutions.

Founder's Word
A personal note from Muhammad Al-Imran bin Abdul Rahim, ACB, Grad.Eng.
I started Malim AI Labs alone at my desk, with the foundation from alfoundation.my since 5 years ago. This is not about the technology, it is about guiding our child to be true to who they really are with accesible knowledge and wisdom.
As a solo developer with access to powerful AI tools like Claude Code, and open-source models, I could build sophisticated Artificial Intelligence into value deliverables knowledge application that would have required a team of 20 engineers just five years ago. The barriers to building impactful technology have never been lower.
I could build commercial products and chase for venture capital, but it is not who I am.
I chose social entrepreneurship because I believe my cause is too powerful to be guided by profit alone.
This isn't altruism - it's pragmatism. what we do today will shape Malaysia's education future. If AI technology becomes another privilege gap between the haves and have-nots, then it's building a divided future. If we democratize AI technology and data now, we're investing in a more equitable, innovative, and prosperous Malaysia.
Why solo? It is a social entrepreneurship, the motivation is not truly for profit so if there is angel investor interested to join this journey as partner, I welcome for partnership (move forward to LLP).
Why now? Because we can never wait for perfect products. We need to experiment, try and error, what we need for learning today and how to build a better solution that help them learn and prepare for an AI native world. Building in public, shipping quickly, and iterating based on real user feedback is how we'll create genuinely useful solutions.
